چکیده
Objective The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between some most common diseases that are known contribute excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and traffic injury crashes. Specific focus on disease crash type (single-vehicle or multiple-vehicle crash) severity. Methods This registry-based considered all passenger car drivers involved in a Sweden 2011 2016 who were 40 years older at time (n = 54,090). For each crash-involved driver, selected medical diagnoses registered from 1997 until day before extracted National Patient Register. assigned 1 4 groups, depending prior diseases: sleep apnea (SA; group 1, n 2,165), disorders (group 2, 724), Parkinson’s epilepsy 3, 645) reference 4, 50,556). Logistic regression analysis compared single-vehicle crashes with moderately/severely injured slightly/uninjured drivers. Results Drivers EDS-related (groups 1–3) had higher probability than group. sizeable effect found for Parkinson’s/epilepsy an odds ratio (OR) 2.5 (confidence interval [CI], 2.1–3.0). crashes, moderate/severe other (OR 1.5; CI, 1.0–2.2) 1.6; 1.1–2.3) group. Conclusions has made first steps toward understanding EDS Having Parkinson’s/epilepsy, particular, elevated crash. A seen as indicative causing crash; thus, having could be interpreted risk factor involvement. well disorders, also related more severe outcomes given occurred. not identified

Excessive daytime sleepiness.
Excessive daytime sleepiness is one of the most common sleep-related patient symptoms, and it affects an estimated 20 percent of the population. Persons with excessive daytime sleepiness are at risk of motor vehicle and work-related incidents, and have poorer health than comparable adults. The most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness are sleep deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea, and...

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) has recognized detrimental consequences such as road traffic accidents, impaired psychological functioning and reduced work performance. EDS can result from multiple causes such as sleep deprivation, sleep fragmentation, neurological, psychiatric and circadian rhythm disorders. Treating the underlying cause of EDS remains the mainstay of therapy but in those w...

BACKGROUND Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and fatigue are common symptoms after traumatic brain injury (TBI), but there is no specific treatment for affected patients. With this pilot study, we aimed at studying the effect of daily modafinil on posttraumatic EDS and fatigue. METHODS We conducted a prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study in 20 patients with TB...
متن کاملExcessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinson's disease: characteristics and determinants.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is frequent in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Occasionally, EDS in PD exhibits narcolepsy-like features. We aimed to assess characteristics and determinants of EDS in consecutive patients with PD. METHODS Thirty consecutive patients with PD underwent a detailed clinical examination. EDS was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale...
متن کاملCircadian melatonin rhythm and excessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinson disease.
IMPORTANCE Diurnal fluctuations of motor and nonmotor symptoms and a high prevalence of sleep-wake disturbances in Parkinson disease (PD) suggest a role of the circadian system in the modulation of these symptoms. However, surprisingly little is known regarding circadian function in PD and whether circadian dysfunction is involved in the development of sleep-wake disturbances in PD. OBJECTIVE...
